Key Information

Day 1- Welcome to Colombia

You’ll be received at Medellín’s José María Córdoba International Airport before driving to Expedition Colombia’s headquarters to meet your guide for a pre-trip meeting. Depending on what time you arrive, we can maybe squeeze at little paddle in! Stay overnight in “La Mestiza” guest house, located in the countryside near Cocorná. Welcome to Colombia’s whitewater paradise!

Day 2- Rio Calderas (classic section)

Today, we will enjoy a medium size river, with a pool drop character. The Upper Calderas is a 12 KM section of class of III and IV with countless rapids and a few min gorges. We will work on scouting and analyzing lines, but also focus on getting more comfortable with bigger size features and hydraulics. It’s very safe as there is always a pool at the bottom of the rapids. Enjoy lunch on a beach and keep going, the best is at the end! At the end of the run, return to the guest house or decide to enjoy a side trip to a large waterfall for a relaxing swim!

Day 3- Rio Santo Domingo (classic section)

Start the day by paddling the Río Santo Domingo, which flows for 12 kilometers through a lush jungle valley. This run is the ideal place to become familiarized with this style of paddling and get ready for our first hike-in section the next day.

Day 4- Rio Santo Domingo (waterfall valley section)

Today you will have to hike 1h30 to reach the put in. Don’t panic we will count on the support of donkey to carry your kayak. Trek into the remote valley of the Santo Domingo river and discover on the way the authentic lifestyle of the Colombian countryside while surrounded by 1000 meters high waterfalls. Kayak down the beautiful rapids this section has to offer and enjoy the crystal clear water.

Day 5- Rio Cocorna+ paragliding or Chocolate farm

It's now time to explore our backyard! The take out of the Cocorna river is only five minutes away walking from your guest house “la Mestiza”. The Cocorná is a low volume creek, and a really fun boulder garden section, continuous and packed with boofs. This short run will give us a free afternoon, and it’s often welcome to rest before the multi-day ! If you want, you can visit our cacao farm or go for a paragliding fly above the valley. It s also time to pack for the expedition starting tomorrow . Since paddling a loaded boat is very different from an empty one, we will take time to learn how to load a kayak properly and go through all the tricks that will make the upcoming multi-day a success!

Day 6- Samana expedition

The Samaná is the crown jewel of the region and one of the best class 4 expedition in the world! Much of our time of the water is dedicated to protecting it, as it is threatened by dams and is the last free flowing river of Antioquia. Get ready for incredible white-water and mind-blowing scenery! The rapids are pool drop, and channelized though sculpted walls of White granite! The white-water is made of huge waves and fun moves but never dangerous. In occasions, harder rapids pop up, so we will take our time and scout. Working as a team, we will make our way deep into pristine jungle. For lunch, we will stop on a beach and relax. Let your guide introduce you to the many endemic plants of the river, and tell you about our fight to save the river from hydroelectric threats. The afternoon paddle will lead us through 2 of the most famous rapids of the river, “the Wall” and “Pizza Rock”. Celebrate your descent at camp, swimming in a natural pool and sipping on wine and “Jungle Juice”. Enjoy a hearty meal and fall asleep to the sound of the jungle!

Day 7- Samana expedition

Wake up in the Jungle and get ready for your last day of kayaking! And it’s not the least! After 2 hours of fun paddling, including the infamous “White Russian” rapid, we will reach the Guatape confluence, where the classic section of the Samana River finishes. Depending on your skills and feeling at the moment, you can choose to drop into the last gorge (Class 4-5), which is only 5 km, but made of 4 huge rapids, or head down via the road to Narises, and relax with a cold beer! Either way, you will have a good time and the team will celebrate a great expedition at the local bar! After lunch, hop in our comfortable 4×4 for a scenic drive through Eastern Antioquia, and reach the guest house by 6 PM. Enjoy dinner at a restaurant on the way or at La Mestiza, and if the energy is there, perhaps a few drinks.

Day 8- Last morning at the base

Wake up and enjoy breakfast! Relax for the morning and share picture and stories with the guides, before heading to your next destination. We offer an airport drop-off or a transfer to Medellin. End of the trip

Colombia has an equatorial tropical climate, making it possible to travel throughout the year. Temperatures remain relatively stable, although rainfall varies depending on the region and time of year. The main rainy seasons are from March to May and from October to November.

Rainfall generally does not cause significant changes in temperature. However, it can raise river levels, creating excellent conditions for whitewater rafting and kayaking, while activities such as paragliding may be more dependent on weather conditions. Our rafting trips operate year-round.

If you prefer to travel during a generally drier period, consider visiting between December and March or from June to September. Climate varies considerably depending on altitude and location: Medellín enjoys mild temperatures throughout the year, while the Andean regions around Bogotá are cooler, particularly at night. The Amazon region is warmer, more humid and receives more rainfall.

Good to know:

  • December to March: generally drier months.
  • March to May and October to November: wetter periods.
  • Festivals and cultural events take place throughout the year, particularly in Medellín.
  • July is an ideal time to see migrating whales along Colombia’s Pacific coast.
  • Peak travel periods generally include December to February and June to August, so booking in advance is recommended.
  • The low season can offer more attractive prices for flights and accommodation.

ATMs are widely available throughout Colombia and generally offer more competitive exchange rates than banks or currency exchange offices. However, not all ATMs accept every type of bank card. For example, some Bancolombia ATMs may not accept certain foreign cards.

Before travelling, we recommend contacting your bank to find out which Colombian ATMs accept your card and to check whether any withdrawal or transaction fees may apply.

You should also notify your bank of your travel plans. This can help prevent transactions from being declined or triggering fraud alerts while you are abroad.

If you would like to have some Colombian pesos with you upon arrival, you can usually order foreign currency from your bank before departure or exchange money at certain airport currency exchange offices.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that includes international medical coverage. This can provide protection in the event of flight or trip cancellations, as well as medical issues that may arise during your stay.

Before travelling, check with your existing health insurance provider to understand how you are covered abroad and which regions of Colombia are included in your policy. Expedition Colombia provides insurance coverage for its staff and participants through Colasistencia.

In the event of an accident or medical emergency, you must carry your original passport with you. Medical facilities may require the original document before providing treatment.

Regarding vaccinations, make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling abroad. Recommendations may vary depending on your itinerary, the regions you plan to visit and your individual circumstances. Certain areas of Colombia also require additional precautions against mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, as well as illnesses such as typhoid fever.

We recommend checking the official travel health guidance from your home country and consulting a healthcare professional before departure to determine which vaccinations and preventive measures are appropriate for your trip.

Water temperature varies depending on the river, altitude, season and weather conditions. In the rivers where we operate rafting trips in Antioquia, the water is generally cool to mild.

  • Calderas River: approximately 15–20°C. Located in a mountainous area, the river generally has cool water.
  • Samaná River: approximately 18–24°C. Its temperature varies with altitude, with cooler water in higher sections and warmer water at lower elevations.
  • Santo Domingo River: approximately 15–20°C. Like the Calderas River, it flows through a mountainous region and generally has cool water.

These temperatures are approximate and may vary depending on the season, weather and local conditions on the day of your activity.

Colombia is a popular destination for international travelers, but as in any country, it is important to take sensible precautions, particularly to reduce the risk of theft and petty crime. By staying aware of your surroundings and following a few simple guidelines, you can enjoy your trip with greater peace of mind.

Here are our main recommendations:

  • Make copies of your passport, visa and itinerary. Keep a copy separately from your original documents and leave another copy with a trusted friend or relative.
  • Never leave your luggage unattended.
  • Do not accept packages, transportation or other services offered by strangers.
  • Keep valuables and important documents in your accommodation’s safe whenever possible.
  • Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or accessories and keep your phone, camera and other valuables discreetly secured.
  • If you are unsure whether an area is safe, ask your hotel staff or local authorities for advice.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and only take what you need with you.
  • Plan your route in advance and stick to recommended areas and routes.
  • At night, avoid dark, isolated or poorly populated areas.
  • Ask your hotel or a local tourist information office to recommend a reliable taxi service.
  • Whenever possible, stay at accommodation recommended by Expedition Colombia.
