Colombia's Most Spectacular Treks

With its three Andean mountain ranges, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and the Colombian Massif, Colombia is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Few countries offer such a diversity of landscapes: Andean forests, tropical jungles, volcanoes, glaciers, high-altitude lakes, páramos, and spectacular valleys. Whether you're looking for total immersion in nature or a genuine physical challenge, Colombia is home to some of the most breathtaking treks in South America.

While these routes offer exceptional scenery, they also demand solid preparation. Some reach altitudes above 5,000 meters, while others cross hot, humid jungles where weather can shift within minutes. Add to this trails that are sometimes poorly marked and a limited number of shelters, and any hike can quickly turn into a real adventure.
For these reasons, setting out alone is strongly discouraged. A guide is sometimes mandatory, and always recommended — not only for safety, but also to better understand the landscapes, wildlife, and local cultures, while supporting the communities along the way.
Here, we invite you to discover Colombia's most beautiful hiking routes, their key features, and our tips for tackling them.

Discover Some of Colombia's Most Spectacular Landscapes

Jungle Trek, Santo Domingo River Valley

Deep in the jungle, just two hours from Medellín, lies a trek still largely undiscovered by tourists: the Jungle Trek. This three-day hike through untouched nature offers a genuine immersion into rural Colombian life, in the heart of the Santo Domingo river valley.

Along the way, you'll discover stunning waterfalls, including the spectacular "La Esmeralda" waterfall, as well as numerous natural pools where you can take a refreshing swim. Between suspension bridges, tropical forest, and pristine landscapes, this trek offers an authentic experience far from the most touristy routes.
Still little-known among travelers and offered by only a handful of agencies, this roughly 22 km trek is perfect for discovering a wilder, more authentic side of Colombia.
Due to its remote location and the area's limited tourism development, it's recommended to go with a local agency to make the most of the experience and benefit from the guides' knowledge of the region.
As with the Lost City, all you need is good physical fitness and readiness to face the jungle's heat and humidity.

The Lost City, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Probably one of Colombia's most popular treks, the Lost City is a multi-day hike (between 3 and 6 days) leading to the archaeological site of Teyuna.
Throughout the trek, you'll have the chance to discover tropical scenery, cross numerous rivers, and meet the indigenous communities living on this sacred land, before reaching the ruins of the Lost City  an ancient city of the Tayrona civilization dating back to around 800 AD.
Today, this route is closely regulated to avoid harming the populations living in the Sierra Nevada and to preserve the region's environment. It can therefore only be undertaken with authorized agencies and a certified guide.

No specific technical preparation is required for this hike. Good physical fitness and the ability to handle the jungle's heat and humidity are enough.

El Cocuy, El Cocuy National Natural Park

Closed for many years due to the impact of tourism on the environment and indigenous communities, El Cocuy Natural Park reopened its doors to hiking enthusiasts in 2018.
Colombia's fifth-largest natural park, it's a protected area home to exceptional wildlife and flora, as well as the territory of the U'wa indigenous community. Its trails cross the páramo before reaching glaciers and snow-capped peaks rising above 5,000 meters, offering some of the country's most spectacular high-mountain scenery.
To preserve this fragile ecosystem, hikes here are strictly regulated. Only three treks are permitted, and all must be completed within a single day. Visitors are not allowed to spend the night within the protected area and must be accompanied by a local guide.
The three accessible routes are:

- Ritacuba Trek: 16 km to the foot of the Ritacuba Blanco glacier, at 4,900 m altitude.
- Laguna Grande Trek: 21 km from the park's central area to the Pico Cóncavo glacier, at 4,750 m altitude.
- Las Lagunillas Trek: 17 km round trip to the Púlpito del Diablo glacier, at 4,850 m altitude.
These high-mountain hikes, located in the Cordillera Oriental, are especially demanding due to their altitude, significant elevation gain, and the length of each day's walk. Good physical fitness is essential to fully enjoy the experience.
Between glaciers, high-altitude lakes, and snow-capped peaks, this trek offers spectacular scenery at every turn.

Laguna Magdalena Trek, Colombian Massif

Starting from San Agustín, this five-day trek combines archaeological heritage, immersion in rural life, and the discovery of the Colombian Massif. Along the way, you'll cross a wide variety of landscapes, from tropical valleys to high-altitude páramos, passing waterfalls, mountain lakes, and the Laguna de la Magdalena, the source of the Magdalena River.

While San Agustín is a must-visit tourist destination, the Laguna Magdalena Trek then reveals a much more authentic and unspoiled Colombia, where hikers remain few and far between.
Due to its remote location and the area's limited tourism development, it's highly recommended to undertake this trek with a local agency. This way, you'll benefit from the expertise of guides who know the terrain intimately, while supporting more responsible tourism that directly benefits local communities.
No technical experience is required for this hike. However, good physical fitness is recommended to sustain several consecutive days of walking over mountainous terrain.

Nevado del Tolima, Los Nevados Natural Park

Located in the heart of Los Nevados Natural Park, Nevado del Tolima is considered one of Colombia's most spectacular high-mountain treks. This four-day hike, usually starting from Salento, leads to the slopes of this volcano, whose summit rises above 5,200 meters.
Along the way, you'll cross a wide range of landscapes Andean forests, lush valleys, páramos, mountain rivers, and high-altitude shelters  before reaching the foot of the volcano and enjoying a breathtaking view of the snow-capped peaks of Los Nevados Natural Park.
While a guide isn't mandatory, it's strongly recommended. Trails can be poorly marked, weather conditions can change rapidly, and altitude significantly increases the difficulty level. Hiking with a local guide lets you benefit from their expertise and move safely through the terrain.
Generally, no technical mountaineering experience is required for the classic route. However, excellent physical fitness is essential due to the trek's duration, significant elevation gain, and altitude, which can exceed 5,000 meters.
Nevado del Tolima is an ideal hike for travelers seeking a genuine physical challenge and some of the most spectacular high-mountain scenery in Colombia.
